Within the PRO-Electoral Integrity project, jointly implemented by ECES and the Association of African Election Authorities, Peer Learning Missions have become a flagship platform for strengthening cooperation, innovation, and professional exchange among African Electoral Management Bodies. Since the launch of the initiative in Kenya in 2022, these missions have provided EMB representatives with unique opportunities to exchange experiences, discuss common electoral challenges, and identify practical solutions through direct peer-to-peer engagement and field-based learning.
Implemented in close collaboration with host EMBs, Peer Learning Missions have fostered mutual trust, continental solidarity, and the sharing of African electoral expertise and good practices. Between 2022 and 2026, the initiative progressively expanded both geographically and institutionally, with missions organized in Kenya, Liberia, Comoros, Namibia, Ghana, Gabon, Burundi, Malawi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Benin, and Italy.
To date, 40 African EMBs have participated in these Peer Learning Missions, including representatives from Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, São Tomé and Príncipe, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zanzibar, and Zimbabwe.
Through this growing continental network, the PRO-Electoral Integrity project continues to strengthen electoral governance, institutional resilience, and African-owned democratic processes across the continent. The long-term commitment to peer exchange and institutional cooperation has been made possible thanks to the support and funding of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, whose contribution has played a pivotal role in fostering sustainable partnerships between African EMBs and promoting democratic integrity across Africa.
