The overall objective of the Pro-Electoral Integrity project is to contribute to peace and security in Africa by developing a common culture of resilience and shared values around integrity in electoral and democratic processes — strengthening the capacities of African Electoral Management Bodies, their regional networks, and other electoral stakeholders to conduct credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections, and in turn contributing to the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law.
To reach this overall objective, the project pursues specific objectives, each aligned with a concrete area of work:
- Promote peer-to-peer learning among African EMBs by supporting Peer Learning and Exchange Missions that bring together EMB chairpersons and senior officials to share experience, provide technical advice, and offer institutional solidarity during sensitive electoral periods.
- Strengthen continental cooperation and shared standards among African EMBs by supporting the Annual Continental Forum of Electoral Management Bodies as a platform for strategic dialogue, peer learning, and policy reflection.
- Reinforce African-led regional electoral cooperation by supporting the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) and the regional networks of EMBs across the continent.
- Embed the values of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) into national education systems through the development, validation, and piloting of pedagogical materials for primary and secondary school curricula across African regions.
- Support the African Union's transitional justice agenda by accompanying its continental forums on transitional justice — including the dedicated forums for women and youth — and contributing to reconciliation, peacebuilding, and inclusive governance in post-conflict contexts.
- Contribute to international cooperation on election observation by supporting the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and the joint reflection of its endorsing organisations on emerging electoral challenges.
These specific objectives translate the project's overall purpose into concrete strands of work, guiding the project's activities across the full electoral cycle.
