From 4 to 6 December 2023, a high-level brainstorming session was organised in Maputo, Mozambique, bringing together representatives of African Union (AU) Member States, regional experts, representatives of Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and AU institutions to reflect on the advancement of the ACDEG education initiative.
The meeting served as an important platform for strategic dialogue and technical exchange on the promotion of democratic values, civic education, and good governance through educational systems across the continent. Discussions focused on reviewing the existing ACDEG pedagogical materials developed for the pilot phase and assessing their relevance, adaptability, and potential impact within different national contexts.
Participants also explored the next steps for the implementation of the pilot phase in selected countries, exchanging perspectives on methodologies, coordination mechanisms, and implementation strategies aimed at ensuring effective integration of ACDEG principles into school curricula and civic education programmes. Particular attention was given to fostering ownership at national level and strengthening cooperation between education authorities, regional organisations, and institutional stakeholders.
The brainstorming session further contributed to reinforcing collaboration among AU Member States, RECs, and partner institutions on initiatives promoting democratic governance, constitutionalism, active citizenship, and civic participation. It highlighted the shared commitment of stakeholders to empowering younger generations through education and to advancing a stronger democratic culture across the African continent.
