The Pro-Electoral Integrity project’s objective is to contribute to peace and security in Africa by promoting a common culture of resilience, democracy, and integrity in electoral processes. Implemented by the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) in partnership with the African Union Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (AUC-PAPS), and funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the project seeks to strengthen the capacities of African Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs), regional electoral networks, and other electoral stakeholders to conduct credible, inclusive, transparent, and peaceful elections in line with national, regional, and international standards.

Building on its previous achievements, the project focuses on conflict prevention, democracy promotion, constitutionalism, and post-conflict peacebuilding. It supports peer-learning and exchange missions among African EMBs, technical assistance to electoral commissions, election observation training, and initiatives aimed at strengthening the implementation of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), including its integration into school curricula across Africa. Through activities such as the EMBs Continental Forum, the project fosters dialogue and cooperation among electoral stakeholders across the continent, encouraging the exchange of best practices and the consolidation of shared values around electoral integrity. In addition, the project contributes to initiatives related to the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation, supporting international standards and cooperation in the field of election observation.

The project also places particular emphasis on transitional justice initiatives, promoting inclusive dialogue, peacebuilding, and reconciliation processes in post-conflict contexts. Furthermore, it seeks to enhance women’s and youth participation in democratic processes, combat electoral violence and disinformation, and reinforce the rule of law and good governance throughout the continent.
