The project aims to contribute to peace, security, and democratic governance in Africa through the development of a common culture of resilience to conflicts and shared values around democracy, particularly electoral democracy and integrity in electoral processes. In line with the African Union’s mandates and the objectives of the Pro-Electoral Integrity initiative, the action seeks to strengthen the capacities of Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs), regional electoral networks, and democratic governance stakeholders to conduct credible, inclusive, transparent, and violence-free elections, in accordance with African, regional, and international standards.
The project is expected to contribute to stronger institutional resilience and enhanced cooperation among African EMBs and regional electoral networks through increased peer learning, exchange of experiences, and the development of common approaches to electoral integrity and conflict prevention. By reinforcing dialogue and collaboration among electoral stakeholders, the initiative aims to strengthen trust in democratic institutions and improve the management and prevention of election-related disputes, violence, and political instability.
Another expected result is the strengthening of technical and operational capacities of EMBs and democratic governance institutions through advisory services, technical assistance, and targeted capacity development activities. The project seeks to improve the preparedness of electoral institutions to address emerging challenges affecting electoral processes, including disinformation, manipulation of information, cybersecurity threats, political polarisation, and the impact of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on elections.
The initiative also aims to reinforce constitutionalism, rule of law, and democratic governance frameworks by supporting institutional dialogue, conflict prevention mechanisms, and post-conflict peacebuilding efforts. Through support to transitional justice processes and governance initiatives, the project contributes to fostering peaceful political participation, inclusive governance, and long-term democratic stability across the continent.
Particular emphasis is placed on the promotion of inclusive participation and democratic ownership. The project is expected to strengthen the participation of women, youth, and vulnerable groups in democratic and electoral processes, while also promoting civic education, democratic values, human rights, and peaceful management of diversity. Through the mainstreaming of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) principles into educational systems and civic initiatives, the action seeks to contribute to the development of a new generation more aware of democratic governance, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.
