At the G7 in Hiroshima in May 2023, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni advocated the importance of the Global South for the Italian and Western strategy: “We need better and more effective cooperation with the Global South,” she said, “We need to work together to shape a free and open international economic order”. But it is not just today that Italy realises that the West has a ‘Global South problem’. This theme is exemplified, above all, by the matter of migration, in particular the 2013-2016 emergency, a real wake-up call for the whole of Europe.
